Eating Lobster @ New Glasgow Lobster Suppers (Prince Edward Island - PEI)
Lobster Restaurants 11:29 AM
When visiting PEI as a tourist, you definitely have to visit one of the few Lobster Suppers restaurants on the island. It was a popular island tradition with the locals dating back to the 1950s. The community group met together to raising the funds with a community lobster supper. The meal for that first supper included hot buttery rolls, potato salad, homemade pie, and naturally ... loads of fresh lobster. Fast forward to today, the meals haven't changed too much other than becoming all you can eat (AYCE) style with the addition of the fresh unlimited PEI mussels.
There were two recommended places from online websites. For this visit, we first went to try New Glasgow Lobster Suppers (original place that started the trend).
Food Rating: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Atmosphere:
It was a very old fashion retro dining hall with wooden chairs and tables. The restaurant was very busy with many tourist (from the tour buses). The restaurant has a full window view overlooking the river beside the place. Everyone was dress casually. The place was full of happy and large families dining together.
Service:
You pick the size of the lobster first (we ordered one pound each). You pay upfront and wait for a server to take you to a table. We were fortunate to come earlier than the rush hour dinner. It took only a few minutes for us to get a table. The service was friendly and helpful in getting refills for your food orders.
Food Comments:
The food was good and hearty - simple and not overdone. Firstly, bread and seafood chowder (or tomato basil soup) came out first - simply delicious! After the initial set of dishes, the servers brought out the huge bucket of steam PEI blue mussels and salads (choices - coleslaw, PEI potato salad and garden salad drizzled with home made balsamic vinaigrette dressing).
For this meal style, you can order as much as you want (except the lobster). I went for 2 huge buckets of the famous PEI mussels.
When you are ready for the lobster, just flag your server and provide them the ticket stub (which indicates the size of the lobster you ordered). It was perfectly cooked and they provided plenty of butter.
After all this eating, there was their signature "mile high" lemon meringue pie with ice cream on the side.
I felt like I had eaten the entire island.
Would I come back? YES!
